Ideal Weight Calculator

Estimate an "ideal" body weight from your height and sex. This figure comes from the Devine formula, originally created in 1974 for drug dosing calculations and later repurposed as a weight reference. Use it as one data point — never as a rigid target.

Sex

Estimated ideal body weight (Devine)

65.9 kg

Approximate healthy weight range: 59.3 kg – 72.5 kg

Based on the Devine formula (1974), originally developed for drug dosing. Treat this as a rough guide only — ideal weight is a contested concept. BMI, body composition, and waist circumference matter more than any single target number.

How the ideal weight is estimated

The Devine formula assumes a baseline weight at 5 ft tall and adds a fixed amount per inch above that, adjusted for sex:

  • Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
  • Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft

We also show a ~10% healthy band around that midpoint, since any single-number target is arbitrary and bodies vary.

Ideal weight is contested

"Ideal body weight" is an old clinical shortcut, not a biological truth. Different formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi, and several others) give different answers for the same person — sometimes by several kilograms. None of them account for muscle mass, bone density, body-frame size, ethnicity, or age. A muscular 80 kg person and a lightly-built 80 kg person have the same Devine "ideal" but very different health profiles.

BMI and body composition tell you more than a single target number, and waist-to-height ratio is a better predictor of metabolic risk for many people. Use this calculator as a sanity-check alongside our BMI calculator, BMR calculator, and calorie calculator, and talk to your doctor before pursuing a specific weight goal.
