What is BMI?

BMI is a screening number calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²). It is a quick, low-cost way to flag weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not directly measure body fat percentage or body composition.

BMI categories (WHO adults)

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25–29.9
  • Obese: BMI ≥ 30

How to interpret your result

A single BMI number is a snapshot, not a verdict. The same BMI can map to very different body compositions — muscular athletes commonly land in the “overweight” range despite low body fat. Use BMI together with other tools like our calorie (TDEE) calculator and ideal weight calculator, and talk to your doctor before making changes.
